 terror lawsThe Government’s independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, David Anderson QC, has suggested in a report to Parliament on terrorism legislation that the UK could introduce an Australian-style law that would make it legal for Britons to fight against the Islamic State. He said that the legislation, modelled on the “declared area offence” law applied in Australia, would make it easier to bring charges against those who travel to Syria to fight for terror groups but also that an overstretched concept of terrorism could no longer be used to catch people who considered themselves to be fighting against terrorists. However, Mr Anderson also warned that David Cameron’s counter-extremism bill, which aims to curb the spread of extremist ideology, “risks provoking a backlash in affected communities” and legitimising state scrutiny of large numbers of law-abiding people.
