Redundancy rights

Former paper firm workers receive £1.5m compensationFormer workers of a Fife paper firm have been awarded £1.5m in compensation after they were made redundant with just one day’s notice. A total of 374 employees lost their jobs when Tullis Russell Papermakers went into administration in April 2015. Despite the company directors being under an obligation to provide employees with at least 45 days’ notice, as more than 100 workers were losing their jobs, this was ignored, meaning each employee was entitled to sue for compensation.

Understanding Your Redundancy Rights Can Save You Thousands
DND Law

Losing your job due to redundancy can be a stressful and overwhelming experience. However, understanding your redundancy rights is essential for protecting your financial well-being. Many workers are unaware of the compensation they may be entitled to or the legal process involved. By educating yourself on your rights, you can ensure that you receive the fair treatment and financial compensation you deserve.

Under UK law, redundancy occurs when an employer no longer requires a role due to various reasons, such as a company closure, downsizing, or the job becoming unnecessary. If you’re made redundant, you may be entitled to redundancy pay, which is based on factors such as your age, years of service, and salary. In some cases, you may also be entitled to a notice period or pay in lieu of notice.

The key to securing your rightful compensation is to understand the legal framework around redundancy. For example, you have the right to receive redundancy pay if you’ve been employed for at least two years. The amount of redundancy pay is calculated using a formula based on your length of service and age at the time of redundancy.

In addition to redundancy pay, your employer must follow a fair and transparent procedure when selecting employees for redundancy. If the process is not followed correctly, you may have grounds for a claim against your employer.

Seeking professional advice can be incredibly beneficial when navigating redundancy. A qualified employment law specialist can help you assess your situation, ensure you are receiving the correct compensation, and even represent you in negotiations or disputes with your employer. Understanding your redundancy rights can help you avoid costly mistakes and secure thousands of pounds in compensation.
