Retired GP’s medical license suspended for climate protest convictions
A retired GP, Dr Diana Warner, has had her medical license suspended after being convicted of non-violent offenses during peaceful climate protests. Warner was imprisoned for six weeks for breaching anti-protest injunctions and gluing her hand to the dock during her plea hearing. The General Medical Council (GMC) ruled that her decision to take part in unlawful action may damage patients’ trust in her. The ruling comes after Dr Sarah Benn, a retired GP in Birmingham, had her medical licence suspended for five months in April after protesting about climate change. Dr Patrick Hart, another GP, will face a similar tribunal next year. Dr Emma Runswick, deputy chair of the BMA council, called on the GMC to rethink its decision, stating that doctors should not be prevented from participating in peaceful protests.
