ENFORCEMENT: Strict liability offshore evasion offence meets criticism
Consultation on HM Revenue & Customs’ (HMRC) proposals for a new strict liability offence for offshore tax evasion by individuals closed last Friday, 9 October. Law firm Kingsley Napley says the proposals are ‘unclear, unworkable and ultimately unjust’, and criticises HMRC for failing to give any examples of conduct that would be caught by the proposals, that are not already covered by offences under existing law.
