Guide to Legalising Document for Turkey using our Notarial services.
When you need to use a document issued in one country in Turkey, it often must be legalized to confirm its authenticity. This process ensures Turkish authorities recognize the document as valid. Here’s a guide on how to get your documents legalized for Turkey through a Notarial Services, especially if you’re starting the process in the UK or Northern Ireland.
1. Identify the Document Type and Requirement
• Common Documents: Types of documents often requiring legalization include birth certificates, marriage certificates, educational diplomas, powers of attorney, business contracts, and certain financial documents.
• Purpose: Documents typically need legalization for purposes like work permits, visas, business transactions, property purchases, or official matters within Turkey.
Note that legalization requirements may vary based on the document type and its intended use in Turkey.
2. Have Your Document Notarized
• Notary Public services A notary public is an official authorized to certify documents and authenticate them
• Notarization Process:
1. Present Original Documents: Bring the original document to the notary.
2. Identification: You’ll need valid ID (like a passport) to verify your identity.
3. Notarial Certificate: The notary will add a certificate to the document, attesting its authenticity or confirming that the copy is true to the original.
4. Fee Payment: Notary services vary in cost, but you can expect to pay between £50-£100 per document, depending on its complexity.

Notarization is required because Turkish authorities need assurance from an official that the document is authentic and unaltered.
3. Apostille (Legalization) by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO)
• What Is an Apostille? An apostille is a certificate added to a document to authenticate it for use in another country under The Hague Convention. Both the UK and Turkey are members of this convention, so an
apostille is sufficient for legalization.
• Apostille Process:
1. Send Document to FCDO: After notarization, you must send the document to the FCDO for the apostille. This can be done by post or through their online application.
2. Pay Apostille Fee: The FCDO charges around £30 per document for the apostille service. Additional charges may apply if you choose expedited processing.
3. Receive Apostilled Document: The FCDO will attach the apostille, confirming the document’s notarization for international use.
Note: Some documents may need an additional certification by the Turkish Embassy in London, depending on Turkish regulations.
4. (If Required) Legalization by the Turkish Embassy or Consulate
• Confirm with Turkish Authorities: Although an apostille often suffices, certain situations may require further legalization by the Turkish Embassy or Consulate, especially for business or legal documents.
• Process at the Turkish Embassy/Consulate:
1. Submit Apostilled Document: Bring or send your apostilled document to the embassy or consulate. You may need an appointment.
2. Fee and Processing Time: The embassy or consulate may charge an additional fee for their stamp or certificate, and processing times can vary.
5. Using the Document in Turkey
Once your document is legalized (apostilled or with additional consular certification), it is ready for use in Turkey. Turkish authorities will recognize it as valid, allowing you to proceed with your intended business, legal, or personal transactions.
Key Points to Remember
• Check Requirements: Confirm with Turkish authorities whether an apostille alone is sufficient or if you need further legalization by the Turkish Embassy.
• Processing Times and Fees: The process can take several days to weeks, depending on each step. Be mindful of fees at each stage.
• Translations: If the document is in English, you might need a certified Turkish translation. You can have it translated in the UK or in Turkey by a certified translator.
By following these steps, you’ll ensure your document is properly legalized for use in Turkey.
