Labour government would focus on corporate tax evasion
Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell told his party’s conference that a Labour government would adopt ‘aggressive’ plans to balance the books. These would target corporate tax avoidance and introduce a more progressive taxation system. McDonnell said Labour ‘will force people like Starbucks, Vodafone, Amazon and Google and all the others to pay their fair share of taxes’ and he added that there would be reviews of the Treasury, the Bank of England and HMRC. Some commentators argue, however, that companies paying less tax is the ‘result of longstanding government policy’ including previous Labour governments’.
