HM Revenue & Customs’ latest tax avoidance guidance contains a warning to people who have used schemes that disguise remuneration through paying them via a series of purchases and sales of an asset, often gold bullion. The scheme users are nominally obliged to pay the value of the asset to a trust at some future point, allegedly making the payment non-taxable. However, HMRC says that in practice the individual actually takes cash, making it taxable earnings.
