Pressure on May to protect workers’ rights
Labour’s Chuka Umunna has warned that the government must draw up new laws to ensure workers do not lose their employment rights after Brexit. The former shadow business secretary has commissioned research by the House of Commons Library highlighting the EU laws that enshrine employment rights, and has written to Theresa May warning her that failure to protect these rights would amount to “a betrayal of British workers”. Meanwhile, the Standing Council on Europe – which was set up by Nicola Sturgeon in the wake of the EU referendum and brings together specialists in legal, European, financial, business and diplomatic matters – has voiced concerns that Brexit could ultimately threaten the right to free speech and social protections. Meanwhile, William Hague writes in the Telegraph that a second EU referendum would be a bad idea. He says it would leave the UK in a state of pure limbo, undermining the country’s negotiating position in the exit talks and compounding the uncertainty for businesses
