Credit checking company Experian has revealed an increase in identity thieves attempting to commit fraud during mortgage and property transactions. Experian said that during the first quarter of 2016, the proportion of attempted mortgage fraud committed by identity thieves increased to 6% – the highest level seen since 2012. On average, this form of fraud is said to have accounted for 4% of detected mortgage application fraud. Overall mortgage fraud attempts dropped significantly during the first quarter compared to Q1 2015, falling from 83 in every 10,000 applications in the first quarter of 2015 to 66 in every 10,000 applications in the first quarter of 2016.
